Day of the City of Samobor

The day of the City is the day when Samobor was proclaimed as a free royal market by the Charter of King Bela IV. 1242, and is solemnly celebrated each year on the third saturday in October.

King Bela, before the battle with Tatars, had met the request of citizens of Samobor and ordered duke Stjepan Babonić to mark the borders of all the town property. On the basis of the Charter, cizitens of Samobor were independent in the judicial affairs, they had free access to their property, meaning that they were not the serfs and as the patrons of their parish they chose the priests who would serve them.

The freedom guaranteed by the Charter has set the guidelines for Samobor development throughout centuries. Today Samobor's economic tradition, along with farmers, cattle farmers, wine growers, is also made of a whole series of autochtonous trades. Thanks to the preservation of the family tradition in Samobor, in recent years, the production of bermet, miners' cake, kremšnita, honey, salami, češnofka, kotlovina and other autochthonous and homemade products is increasingly evolving. What makes Samobor continually attract new residents nowadays is a pleasant environment for family and raising children, fresh air and nature.

The central part of the celebration of the City of Samobor is the solemn session of the City Council, where acknowledgments are given to the most important citizens and other persons, their associations, other local communities, institutions, companies, religious communities and other legal entities for the achievements that contribute to development and improvement of the City of Samobor. Acknowledgments are also given as a sign of honour and grattitude.

Along with the solemn ceremony, the celebration consist of a variety of events with the participation of kindergarten children, elementary school students, Samobor artists, as well as of exhibitions and other cultural and artistic programs.
