Marija's Cake was named after Marija Hotković, a woman from Samobor to whom Ferdo Livadić, a Croatian composer and one of the leaders of the Croatian national revival, dedicated in 1822. the composition Nocturne in F minor. It is considered to be one of the earliest examples of nocturne in piano literature. Marija Hotković – Peharnik was one of the last members of the main lineage of the family Hotković and a fervent supporter of the Croatian national revival. She used to visit her cousins in Samobor often and was friends with Ferdo Livadić. The recipe for Marija’s cake comes from the family archives and the cake can be savoured at the central square in the pastry shop Saramassi (Trg kralja Tomislava 7).


Ingredients for dough:

28 dg of butter
28 dg of flour
14 dg of almonds
20 dg of sugar
2 egg yolks
Juice of 1 orange
2 tablespoons of sour cream

Ingredients for glaze:

28 dg of sugar
6 tablespoons of red currant marmalade


Mix  and divide into 4 parts (list), then bake. The first part should be filled with nuts, the second one with red currant jam, the third one with almonds in milk with vanilla sugar. Cover with glaze.
