Saint Juraj’s Chapel

People in Samobor have the love of wine and vineyards, proof of which can be found in the chapel of Saint Juraj. The chapel construction costs were covered by the winegrowers of Giznik and Mala Rakovica on the holy place mentioned for the first time in the 16th century. The legend says that this church on Tepec appeared on that location by miracle and that it has no foundations.

It believed that the construction began around 1620 financed by volunatry donations by the winegrowers and was finished in 1799 when the tower was completed. The chapel was looked after by the Brotherhood of Saint George but the Baroque altar, paintings and the entire inventory was lost in a fire during the Second World War and the chapel stood empty until 1967. During 1992 the detailed renovation of the chapel was organized by the Brotherhood and it is in the second category of listed heritage.
