Saint Rocco’s Chapel

A sacral gem in the centre of the village of Galgovo, this Baroque-style chapel of Saint Rocco hides fabulous wealth in its interior. It was built on the spot of a wooden chapel mentioned back in 1642 when it was dedicated to the Saints Fabian and Sebastian. As the chapel was built in stone and extended by the year 1678 it changed its name and through the centuries went through several constructions, extensions, and renovations some of which have been going on till today.

The chapel acquired its present form in 1765, and the bell tower its shape at the beginning of the 20th century. It is on the list of the protected sacral heritage of the Ministry of Culture, and you can see why when you enter it. The wall niche is decorated by a fresco wall painting with the image of Saint Rocco from the middle of the 18th century, and the late Baroque illusionist wall paintings are believed to be from the workshop of the famous Anton Lerchinger. The chapel was decorated in 1901 by Ivan Goszar, and in 1934 the great Croatian painter Zlatko Prica painted the mural “Taking clothes off Jesus at the Calvary”, which is considered his first famous work.
