The Well on the Main Square

The one who once drinks from the well always returns to Samobor.

The Well on the Main Square

A glass of water has always been a sign of hospitality. Still, in Samobor, the “wine is drunk from the pots”, so the water is therefore drunk from the well – the one placed in the centre of the King Tomislav Square. The first official record of the well dates back to 1764 but nobody knows for sure since when there is a clear water on the main square. What we do know is that in the 18th century there was nothing to see on the square except the well and the chapel next to it with the statue of the Wounded Jesus. After a great flood in the middle of the 19th century only the well survived and it has been there until today except for a short period in the 1960s. Luckily, it was returned to its spot in the town centre in order to cater for the thirsty and to serve to verify a legend – the one who once drinks from the well always returns to Samobor.
