Vilinske jame (Fairies’ Caves)

Sometimes it seems that most of Samobor is below the ground because now and then a new cave system or a cave is discovered in the area. Above the Breganica stream, not far away from Tušin, there is a circuit of many small caves called “Vilinske jame” – Fairies’ Cave. Judging by the name, it is evident that the locals were very imaginative so according to the legend, good fairies lived here in the ancient times.

The professionals, however, say that the caves were created by the sedimentation of limestone on the place where the water from the tributary was dripping down over a steep rock into the Breganica stream. The biggest cave is 12 metres long, 10 metres wide and 8 metres high, and on the right-hand side from the entrance there is a narrow and short path leading to the other two halls. Unfortunately, the flowstone that used to embellish the cave has been destroyed. The easiest way to reach the caves is through Slani dol, following the valley of the Breganica or Višnjevac stream, and are an ideal starting or passing spot for longer excursions into Samobor or Žumberak hill range.
